The Mount Samat Flag Pole stands prominently within the Dambana ng Kagitingan, or Mount Samat National Shrine, a historic landmark located in Bataan. Known by its iconic White Memorial Cross, the shrine was built to honor and commemorate the bravery of Filipino and American soldiers who fought against the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Its creation was initiated by President Ferdinand Marcos through Proclamation No. 25, s. 1966.

Mount Samat was the site of the intense Battle of Bataan in 1942, one of the last strongholds of Filipino and American resistance against the Japanese invasion. The defenders endured relentless artillery fire and aerial bombardment before ultimately surrendering on April 9, 1942—an event that marked the end of the battle and the beginning of the harrowing Bataan Death March. In remembrance of the fallen, the Mt. Samat Flag Pole has been designated by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) as a 24/7 flag site, where the Philippine flag is permanently hoisted as a symbol of courage and sacrifice.

    Seal of the week: Bataan

    Special FeatureNational Flag in Seal

In celebration of National Flag Day this May 28, we highlight the official seal of the Province of Bataan for this week’s feature.

Prominent elements of this distinctive seal include a hoisted Philippine flag with a backdrop of white crosses, a flaming sword in the center, the three stars, soldiers, and a broken chain that echoes freedom. The design and choice of elements in the seal memorializes Bataan’s historic role mainly during the Second World War.

The flaming sword in the center of the seal symbolizes the bravery of our soldiers and guerrilla fighters during World War 2. The Red and the Blue Panel that serves as the background, reflects the battles fought in the soils of Bataan and the peace that followed in the night.

The province was founded in 1754 by Governor General Pedro Manuel Arandia. It was initially formed with the towns of Orion, Pilar, Balanga, Abucay, Samal, Orani, Llana Hermosa, San Juan Dinalupihan, Mariveles, Bagac, Morong, and Maragondon. Since then, Bataan served as the setting for valor showcased by the Filipinos throughout our history. It joined other provinces during the outbreak of the Philippine Revolution in 1896. And during the Second World War, the Bataan Peninsula became the stronghold of the retreating Filipino and American forces. On April 9, 1942, around 80,000 Filipino soldiers ultimately surrendered in this province, marking the beginning of the infamous Bataan Death March.

    History of the Philippine Flag

Today, as we celebrate National Flag Day, we commemorate the first time the Philippine flag was unfurled after the Battle in Alapan in 1898. It was a moment of triumph and unity, symbolizing our nation’s hard-won freedom as well as the bravery of those who fought for our independence. Let us honor this legacy by upholding the values our flag represents: courage, justice, and love for country.

    History of the Philippine Flag

From May 28 to June 12, we observe Flag Days, a time when we are encouraged to display the Philippine flag in government offices, schools, businesses, and even our homes. It’s a simple act, but a powerful reminder of our shared identity and the sacrifices made for our liberty.
Let’s raise our flags with pride and let it wave as a symbol of our unity, resilience and love for the country.
